This is the earliest of Schubert's ballad-cantatas. The first and second versions differ slightly throughout. Sometimes Schubert tightens up a recitative, sometimes changes a transitional melody, sometimes doubles the bass octaves. In the second version, he adds dynamics to the accompaniment and an extended piano solo illustrating the diver's second attempt at the goblet. (Search)
